The Incoherence of Pope Francis

Main Street: Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai goes to jail—and Pope Francis says nothing. (12/07/20) Images: Reuters/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyPope Francis called President Biden on Sunday to talk about Gaza. The papal phone call came amid Israel’s public criticism of the Vatican’s tendency to treat the Israel Defense Forces as morally equivalent to the Hamas terrorists who targeted, attacked and butchered unarmed Israeli civilians. Israel’s irritation was kicked off by a joint statement on Oct. 7, the day of the Hamas attack, from the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem. But the statement didn’t name Hamas, and it called for the “cessation of all violent and military activities that bring harm to both Palestinian and Israeli civilians.”

Another Kind of March Madness: Tell the NCAA to Buzz Off
  + stars: | 2023-03-28 | by ( William Mcgurn | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The Final Four is upon us, and with it the fiction that National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball is an amateur competition. The NCAA has a vested interest in this fiction, because the bulk of its annual $1.14 billion in revenue comes from its March Madness tournament. Critics fall into two broad camps. The first complains that those generating the cash—the players—are the only ones who aren’t paid. The other argues that college sports has become a big business, corrupting our universities.
What’s the Matter With Arkansas?
  + stars: | 2023-03-22 | by ( William Mcgurn | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Arkansas is “the reddest state not only in the South but in the entire nation.” So declared the chairman of the state GOP at the 2020 Republican National Convention, just before the Arkansas delegation cast its votes for Donald Trump. Arkansas went for Mr. Trump by nearly 2 to 1 in both 2016 and 2020. Both of its U.S. senators and all four representatives are Republicans. In November, Republicans added to their already comfortable majorities in the state House and Senate. In that same election, Sarah Huckabee Sanders trounced her Democratic opponent and was elected governor.
